Movment 101
COURSE DESCRIPTION

DESCRIPTION: This course introduces the non-dancer or the beginner to several different dance styles in a comfortable, fun environment. Instruction and movement are designed to reinforce the history and culture of each dance. Suitable for children and adults 10 and up.

TIME COMMITMENT: 1 hour a week

CONTRACT HOURS: $35 per month or $10 drop-in

INSTRUCTIONAL METHOD: Demonstration/Improvisation/TV Media/Live Performance

MAJOR LEARNING OUTCOMES:
The student will:

1. Develop an appreciation for other cultures, dance styles, and learning methods.

2. Exhibit comprehension of timing, style, and energy quality as they relate to movement phrases and performance quality.

3. Build body awareness, self-expression, self-confidence, and positive social skills.

4. Increase body awareness, flexibility, creativity, musicality, and showmanship.

5. Create solo and/or group compositions (optional).

Dance- Beginning Modern Dance

Age group(s) designed for:
Children, teens, and adults 10 and up.

How many hours will the class require to complete?
1 hour a week

Is this class currently being offered in the community? No, this all-inclusive, beginners’ class is not offered elsewhere in the community. I am providing a course in movement and longevity for the non-dancer, intermediate/advanced dancer, and beginners alike. The course also combines history, culture, and fun to learn dances from around the world.

Does the class seem well thought out and realistic in both goals and scope?
Much planning and research has gone into building this course. The goal is to understand and embody several different styles of dance; each one offering a new understanding of the body and how it moves and expresses culture and self.


What are your goals for the participants?
To increase body awareness, coordination, stimulate senses, spark creativity, and build self-confidence. Exhibit comprehension of a variety of dance styles and rhythms. Demonstrate general physical skills such as: muscular strength and control, endurance, balance, timing, sense of body in space, proper physical carriage, and musicality.

What specific skills will participants learn?
Body awareness, physical expression, musicality, and physicality.
Learning the basics of dance and movement is a life-skill that will give participants an appreciation for art and world cultures.

What kind of facility do you need?
A clean studio with proper dance floor. Mirrors are not necessary.

How many participants could you instruct and still maintain a quality program with an enjoyable atmosphere?
25 students is the maximum for this course. Any more people and the movement is restricted, not allowing for full expression.
