On-site Creative Movement Education
COURSE
DESCRIPTION
A
classroom that has dance and other forms of crea-
tivity has a spirit of its own—a spirit where children come
together to explore, to grow, to adventure, and to have
fun.
Sharing feelings and sharing experiences unifies children
in
comraderie along the creative path. A rationale for
including
dance in the school curriculum or in library programming is
that it provides children a freedom, a freedom of
expression,
yet it also provides a kind of matrix for their expression.
All
children need to be validated for their creativity. Dance
is a
form of creativity that can be experienced on a body level
and
often seems more immediate and more profound to children
than intellectual achievements. Creating dances provides
chil-
dren with an opportunity to discuss, plan, and concretize
abstract material. Planning a dance utilizes the
collaborative
method, not just among students, but with the teacher being
part of the team. Therefore, dances can represent the
collec-
tive consciousness of the group.

What are your goals for the participants?
Increase body awareness, flexibility, creativity,
musicality, and expressive capacities. Organize original
movement material into choreographed studies. Create solo
and/or group compositions. Demonstrate comprehension of
time, shape, energy, space and quality as they relate to
movement phrases.
What specific skills will participants learn?
Learning the basics of dance is a life-skill that will give
students an appreciation for movement, the arts, and
self-expression.
What kind of facility do you need?
A clean, open space. Mirrors are not necessary. I enjoy
taking the experience outdoors but this requires additional
faculty.
How many participants could you instruct and still maintain
a quality program with an enjoyable atmosphere?
25 students is the maximum for this course. Any more people
and the movement is restricted, inhibiting full expression
and reinforcement.
Is this class currently being offered in the community? If
so, is the demand for this class more than is available, or
would the addition of another class be in competition with
other programs, or is the demand higher than what is being
currently provided?
This course is being offered in the community, but not in
the schools. The classes currently being offered are in
high demand and there are often waiting lists involved. I
provide these educational movement classes on-site at:
daycare/pre-school centers, elementary and middle schools,
art academies, and community centers.
